Historic
US 40 over Donner Summit
The concrete arched bridge at McGlashan Point
was built in 1925 and as part of US 40 was a main east-west
artery over the Sierra's until it was replaced by Interstate
80 in the mid 1960's.
At an elevation of 7,239 feet U.S. 40 over Donner Summit was
often closed during and after heavy snowfalls forcing motorists
to us an alternate route that passed over the Sierra's further
north at a lower elevation.
Today this once important road carved through the Sierra's
is used by Truckee locals and skiers headed for the nearby ski
resorts.
