Long a symbol of the Canadian Prairies the wooden
grain elevator is fast dwindling in numbers. The elevator
is a vertical wharehouse that could store 25,000 to 35,000
bushels of grain. Since their first appearance in the 1870's
nearly 6,000 were built. Spaced seven to 11 miles apart along
the railway lines every prairie village had one or two elevators
while towns usually had 3 or more. Many of the grain elevators
have been replaced by larger concrete grain holding towers
with about a thousand wood elevators remaining on the Canadian
