The Humboldt River meanders alongside the abandoned US 40 roadbed through Carlin Canyon in Central Nevada. Located between Elko and Carlin the route following the river was the path used by Indians, early pioneers and explorers, the California Immigrant Trail, Donner Party, Transcontinental Railroad, Victory Highway and US 40. The railroads built tunnels to the south through the Carlin Unconformity, a unique geological feature, in the early 1900's bypassing this section of the canyon and later tunnels were built as part of Interstate 80.
