The Felix Schoolhouse was built in the late 1860?s and located in the center of Salt Spring Valley, in Calavaras County, California. The one room school served the ranch families then living in the valley. The school was closed in 1947 and has been preserved by former students. The seasonally hospitable landscape and year-round water resources of Salt Spring Valley attracted modest ranching and farming operations to the area from the earliest days of the Gold Rush. These ranchers, their employees, and their retainers also dabbled in mining in the area from the 1850's to the present day. Photographed 12/03
