Grumman FM-2 Wildcat. Grumman Aircraft originally designed the plane in 1935 and was the first all-metal, carrier launched, monoplane fighter purchased by the U.S. Navy. Though it was outclassed by faster and more maneverable Japanese aircraft the little fighter performed well until more advanced replacements arrived.
