Natural surfactants in the wind whipped waters of Mono Lake form suds that are deposited on the lake's northern shoreline. High concentrations of carbonates in Mono Lake make it very alkaline with a pH of approximately 10 which is roughly equivalent to household glass cleaner. Because of the high level of alkalinity Mono Lake water tastes bitter and feels slippery. Some observers of Mono Lake water claim it feels and behaves a lot like soapy water.
