A grain elevatar stands sentinel on the plains of Saskatchewan. Long a symbol of the Canadian Prairies the wooden grain elevator is fast dwindling in numbers. ..Since the first appearance of the grain elevator in the 1870's nearly 6,000 were built. Many of the grain elevators have been replaced by larger concrete grain holding towers with about a thousand wood elevators remaining on the Canadian prairie.
