A Douglas A-1D Skraider piloted by astronaut Bill Anders leads a formation that includes a P-38 Lightning, F-16 Fighting Falcon, and A-10 Thunderbolt II in the Air Force Heritage Flight during the 2007 Reno National Championship Air Races at Stead Field in Nevada.
The P-38 Lightning represents World War II era aviation, The A-1D Skyraider represents the Korean and Vietnam eras, and the A-10 Thunderbolt and F-16 Fighting Falcon represent the modern day Air Force aviation. The Air Force Heritage Flight program began in 1997 to commemorate the Air Force's 50th anniversary and has continued to combine aircraft from World War II, Korea, Vietnam, and state of the art fighters in formation flight displays.
